Manufacturing Culture
As part of the 10th birthday celebrations at DCA we hosted a special one-day think tank event in partnership with Scottish Arts Council. The event aimed to provide some challenges to existing orthodoxies about the nature and activity of cultural centres in the UK. The day featured two presentations by leading thinkers in this field, one by Tom Fleming and one by Brian Holmes, with an opportunity for debate and discussion on the role of the contemporary cultural centre.
In the midst of changing perceptions of the significance and role of culture in our society many agencies face demands to contribute to a wide range of national policy agendas. The event aimed to explore the question ' what is the role of the cultural centre in the 21st century' - with a view to helping us to understand the reality of the current position, as well as the beliefs, values and systems it represents.
