Pre-Opera Talk with Andrew Roger: La Traviata
Sat 14 April
Meeting Room
Join us for a pre-opera talk with Andrew Roger, tutor of Opera Appreciation courses at Dundee University.
Andrew will provide an introduction to the evening’s performance, discussing its history, composer, notable productions and key highlights.
La Traviata, based on the story of LA Damne aux Camelias, is one of Verdi's best-loved operas with its unstoppable flow of gorgeous tunes. Verdi has now moved on from the world of historical drama to what is probably the first opera about contemporary life, in a story of family strife and disease-blighted love. Violetta is a role coveted by sopranos world-wide, but the wholly-successful Violetta is rare. What makes it so difficult? Well, it requires three sopranos - a coloratura, a lyric and a dramatic soprano - and unfortuantely they are all called Violetta - what a challenge! And what of the male characters? If the tenor and baritone are not of the same calibre as the soprano, it will show - so the pressure is on for them too!" - Andrew
Tea and coffee will be served. Talk lasts until 30 minutes before the opera is due to start. Tickets are £5 per person – book now on 01382 909900.
