Pre-Opera Talk with Andrew Roger: Manon

Sat 7 April

Meeting Room

Join us for a pre-opera talk with Andrew Roger, tutor of Opera Appreciation courses at Dundee University.

Andrew will provide an introduction to the evening’s performance, discussing its history, composer, notable productions and key highlights.

"Massenet's Manon, one of his most famous operas, was first performed in 1884 at the Opera Comique. It is a homage to the 18th century French rococo period combined with the passionate romantic music on the late 19th century. Although the opera does find time to highlight the hero's dilemma, it concentrates mainly on Manon's turbulent life; beginning as an innocent girl falling in love before becoming the mistress of a wealthy old man who she leaves for her first love. The role requires a singing actress who can depict equally well Manon's initial enthusiasm for life, her mastery of the art of seduction and her final complete degradation." - Andrew

Tea and coffee will be served. Talk lasts until 30 minutes before the opera is due to start. Tickets are £5 per person – book now on 01382 909900.
