Find your perfect new year's resolution

Struggling to think of a resolution for 2018? We're here to help!

28 December 2017

Team DCA has got together and thought of some simple ideas for resolutions that you'll want to keep, as you'll be enjoying them so much - make 2018 bold, open, meaningful, and magical with DCA!

‘Getting Creative’ is, in our humble opinion, the perfect resolution. Our Print Studio offers a wide array of courses that can help you do just that: from one-day of Screen Printing your very own Andy Warhol-style masterpiece, to four-weeks mastering Black and White photography there’s something for everyone. Try something new, take your current skills further, or even just pop in to the Print Studio to see what it’s all about - have a look and start planning how to Get Creative.

Perhaps you’d like to widen your cultural horizon, and gain further insight into contemporary art in 2018? DCA can help with that! Not only are our galleries always free (we know how tight the pennies can be in January) but we also have a whole range of gallery events, many of which are entirely free (and those that are not are still very low-cost!). Deepen your knowledge and enhance your experience of contemporary art: join Andrew Lacon in Conversation with Eoin Dara (Head of Exhibitions) on 20 January, or spend An Evening with Sculptural Placement Group on January 24. Aged 12-16? Talking Art is the perfect event for you. A Senior Citizen (Kane)? We have gallery tours, then a creative workshop programmed just for you! Browse through our gallery events, and you’ll be sure to find something that you’ll find both appealing and entirely complementary to your resolution.

Why not make it your resolution to start, or add to, your art collection in 2018? Our wide range of DCA Editions is the perfect place to begin! We regularly work directly with artists who are exhibiting in our galleries to develop limited edition artworks for sale, giving you the opportunity to get your hands on affordable artwork by critically acclaimed contemporary artists with prices starting from as little as £6. You can even spread the cost of buying artwork priced over £100 through the Own Art scheme, which allows you to take out an interest free loan (representative 0% APR). Browse and buy all of our DCA Editions online and know that the proceeds of every sale are channelled back into DCA’s artistic programme, helping us to continue sharing compelling contemporary art with our audiences. Yay!

Trying to think of a unique resolution that’s easy to keep? Supporting local businesses and independent makers is always a win/win situation – you know your money is going direct to the maker, and you’re buying something unique that’s guaranteed to impress! Our shelves are full of work by contemporary crafters, local and international designers, beautiful homeware brands, fun toys for wee ones, a wide range of books and much more. You can also find a selection of our wares online, alongside DCA editions and publications, so you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own home.

We can also can help you dazzle your friends and family by giving them thoughtful gifts throughout 2018! We know it can be hard to remember everyone’s birthdays and to keep track of all those special occasions but we have a solution: treat yourself to a lovely new diary or calendar, fill in all those dates to remember and then pop into DCA Shop and pick up the perfect cards and gifts.

Or perhaps you're stuck in a in film rut? Tired of keeping up with superhero franchises or jaded by horror reboots? Try something new at the cinema – you could explore foreign-language titles, silent comedies, restored vintage classics or even experimental art films. Not only will you discover fresh stories and great actors, but you’ll become more knowledgeable about the movie history and international context that influences those big screen blockbusters. Get started with some of DCA’s new films for 2018...

Phoenix: A tightly-wound tale of identity and betrayal set in the aftermath of World War II, Phoenix is an absorbing German drama that’ll keep you hooked until the end. Part of our Fokus: Films from Germany series.

HostilesThink Westerns are all six-shooters ‘n’ tumbleweed? Think again; Christian Bale’s new film Hostiles is dark, complex and sometimes even poetic. If you love this, don’t miss our short series of Westerns, handpicked to put the film in context.

PlaytimeOne of two Artist’s Choice films at DCA this season, Playtime has been chosen by Kate V Robertson to complement her exhibition This Mess Is Kept Afloat. Beautiful, absurd and deeply funny, Playtime will bring a smile to your face this winter. Be sure to check out our other Artist’s Choice pick, Somers Town, too.

Whatever your resolution, you're sure to find lots to inspire at DCA - we'd love to hear what you're looking forward to in 2018, so be sure to share your thoughts and photos with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram by tagging #helloDCA!
