Our new cinema guide is here!

The summer is nothing if not predictable in cinema land, with big action blockbusters trying to attract an audience and family titles pitched at passing a rainy day. However, in recent years, added to this mix has been what we call in the industry ‘counterprogramming’ – films which offer an alternative choice. These films, including historical drama, love stories, and thought-provoking documentaries, are just as important to our programme as any others. We’ve managed to find the best from all these genres for you to enjoy when you fancy a break from the best (or worst) of the glorious Scottish summer weather.

Over the past few months we have been piloting autism friendly screenings with ASAD (Autism Support Angus and Dundee). We have learnt a lot from their expert advice and guidance and are now opening up these screenings to any family who wishes to come along. Films will screen in our smaller cinema, without advertising and with consistent lighting and lower sound levels. These will now be a regular feature of every guide and we look forward to introducing this new audience to the world of cinema at DCA.

Finally, I wanted to personally draw your attention to a very special film which is included in this guide. My Life as a Courgette is a beautiful stop-motion animation about a group of unforgettable young people in care. A favourite with critics, audiences, the DCA cinema team and well, anyone who sees it really, it genuinely is a wee gem. Please don’t miss it. It’s one of my top picks of the year.
