Anya Gallaccio, one of the first artists to exhibit at DCA is best known for her installations using ephemeral natural materials such as salt, ice, flowers and fruit – all of which change and decay over the period of their exhibition. Gallaccio returned to DCA Print Studio in 2002 to produce White Ice/Black Ice: a set of two prints consisting of a screen print on mirrored acrylic and an etching.

The images originate from the artist’s photographs of melting ice; blocks of which had been cut from a frozen river in Scandinavia, and transported to a city location where they were allowed to slowly melt. Over several stages she separated the images in order to push them to the opposite extremes suggested by the printmaking process.

The edition was the first to be commissioned and printed at DCA Print Studio as part of the DCA Editions series and is now part of the Tate Gallery and Victoria & Albert Museum collections.

Anya Gallaccio was born in Paisley, Scotland and lives and works in London. She has exhibited extensively including solo exhibitions at Camden Arts Centre, Ikon Birmingham and Tate Britain, She was short-listed for the Turner Prize in 2003.
