The Lonely Piper describes himself as a ‘solitudinous soul and ancient provocateur… whose work is informed by the geographical, historical and cultural landscape and fictitious and fact-based Caledonian narratives.’

Cat’s Paw (A Fragment), was commissioned in 2006 during the DCA exhibition Where the Wild Things Are in which The Lonely Piper’s work was featured. The subject of this work is a fictitious love affair between the artist and the River Tay. The title ‘Cat’s Paw’ is derived from an old sailors’ term describing a light breeze that moves a small area of the water’s surface. In the artist’s own words: ‘the ‘Fragment’ part alludes to this verse being part of a larger piece of writing (a short poem originally entitled ‘A Piper Dwam’).’

Using a hand-drawn image, the artist developed this screenprint in which his delicate strands of verse are suspended within the threads of a complex spider’s web: a recurring metaphor within his work.

The Lonely Piper (C.R.M b.1975, Inverness / T.L.P b.1999, Rannoch Moor) graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee in 1998 and lives and works in Dundee. Selected group exhibitions include Bloomberg Space, London; The Embassy Gallery, Edinburgh; and Galeria Sztuki, Wozownia, Poland.
