Printed media (newspapers and magazines) is an ephemeral way for a culture to transmit information and to tell its stories, reflecting the changing nature of such narratives. Using this material in collage enables me to attempt to articulate my own intimate experiences via a collective language. These two prints explore the ‘language’ of private moments, made on a public stage.” Kevin Hutcheson

Collage provides both the material and philosophical basis of Kevin Hutcheson’s practice. He makes work that attempts to record time and reinterpret experience, using imagery and text taken from a range of printed sources to explore different questions of both personal and cultural history, of context and narrative.

Kevin Hutcheson was born in Hamilton in 1971, and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee (BA 1997), and Chelsea College of Art & Design (MFA 2002). He has exhibited widely, including group shows at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (2000); Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (2004); Tate Modern, London (2007) and in ‘The Associates’ at Dundee Contemporary Arts (2009). Solo exhibitions include Collective Gallery, Edinburgh (2003); Jacky Strenz Gallery, Frankfurt (2009) and Glasgow Project Room, Glasgow (2010). He lives and works in Glasgow.
