Claire Barclay – Ideal Pursuits, published by DCA, 2003

Claire Barclay exhibited at DCA in August 2003 and returned in 2005 to make this series of diptychs in the Print Studio. Beginning with found images of hunting hounds and a book of patterns of traditional Scottish ‘houndstooth’ weaves, she allowed this imagery to undergo several metamorphoses as she explored the intrinsic qualities of the print process.

As with her sculptural work, these prints show a process-based approach that engages with a specific technique and material. The mechanical repetition of the houndstooth pattern is contrasted by her use of hand-cut stencils which allow inherent irregularities to remain visible. As the pattern unfurls itself across the paper it reveals frayed textile-like edges giving way to the structure of sharp-edged thorns; a distillation of the artist’s deliberately ambiguous exploration of the tensions between naturally found and machine-made forms.

Claire Barclay was born in Paisley in 1968 and lives and works in Houston, Scotland. She studied at Glasgow School of Art and has had solo exhibitions at, CCA, Glasgow, The Showroom, London, and Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
