Steven Cairns’ works are an open ended exploration of visual and semiotic associations, often incorporating a collage-like aesthetic whether through film or on paper. He produced this edition with the DCA Print Studio whilst participating in the exhibition The Associates for DCA's 10 year anniversary.

In this untitled print a photocopy of a supercomputer is inserted as backdrop to an image culled from an old National Geographic magazine portraying a group of children performing a trust exercise. Emphasizing the confines and materiality of the page, Cairns transposes a sense of cropping and layering to this digitally composed work; each element displaced from a particular time and context.

Each print in this edition has been finished by the artist with an individual smear of varnish across the front of the image – a delicate but deliberate gesture, imbuing the print with a sense of play and reversal.

Steven Cairns was born in 1983 and graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 2006. He currently lives and works in Dundee. His work was presented by Transmission Gallery during the Gothenburg biennial in 2007 and featured in The Associates for DCA’s 10 year anniversary in 2009. He was recently selected for the exhibition Running Time: artist films in Scotland 1960 to now at the National Galleries, Scotland (October – November 2009).
