The exquisite miniature paintings of Christopher Orr depict nature as awe-inspiring, often submerged in supernatural mists. They evoke the overwhelming power of nature reminiscent of the romantic landscapes by Caspar David Friedrich and J.M.W. Turner, who through their paintings sought to reinvent nature rather than imitate it. Orr culls his assortment of subjects from old copies of the National Geographic, Ladybird books and wildlife publications. Working with the Print Studio team to experiment with several etching techniques, he selected this aquatint and monoprint method to best create the atmosphere desired. The resulting characters within his small, ethereal landscapes seem lost or out of place in nature, as if they had been accidentally dropped into some foreign land.
Born in 1967 in Helensburgh, Scotland, Christopher Orr lives and works in London. He studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee and Royal College of Art, London. Recent solo exhibitions include IBID Projects, London; Nyehaus, New York; and Hauser & Wirth, Zurich.
