King Kong

Discovery Family Film Club

The second film in this month’s Family Film Club offer is another oft-told tale, but this time we’re going right back to the original, made over 80 years ago. Some of the special effects may not quite match the vision of Spidey web-slinging his way down New York’s 5th Avenue, but at the heart of the story is the love for Beauty by The Beast – and the impact of this tale as old as time has kept it fresh for the best part of a century.

The story is a simple one. Film director Carl Denham and actress Ann Darrow arrive on a prehistoric island in the hope of capturing a giant ape, worshipped as a god by the local inhabitants. The mighty Kong shows his sensitive side by falling for Ann, and, after his transportation to New York, rampages across the city in search of his new love.

On 14 November 1933, the Courier’s review of the film’s premiere in Dundee proudly remarked that “crowded audiences testify to the widespread interest in Hollywood’s triumph in the art of faking”. Rightly revered as a classic of the silver screen, we’re delighted to bring it back to the cinema so new audiences can revel in its unique, magical fakery afresh.
