Relaxed Screening: The Little Mermaid Sing-a-Long

Discovery Family Film Club

Once upon a time, Danish master storyteller Hans Christian Andersen came up with a wee tale featuring the love of a young mermaid for a land-based prince of the realm. Many years later, Hollywood-based master filmmaker Walt Disney dusted off the original narrative as part of a new project to follow on from his first feature-length animation Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Things got a bit delayed, however, and it was only in the 1980s that Disney Studios returned to the idea, and had the clever notion of adding to the mix with a crab, a seagull and a sorceress (along with a soon-to-be-Oscar-winning soundtrack). And in doing so, they came up with the first title in the ‘Disney Renaissance’, a thunderously successful run of musical, animated feature films based on well-known stories (including Discovery favourites Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin).

These days it’s not just a cartoon but also a stage show – and there’s a live-action film version allegedly in the pipeline – so this particular Disney franchise most definitely has legs. This latest release of the film comes in glorious sing-along – we’re providing on-screen lyrics (follow the bouncing shell!) so you can dive right in and sing-along to those classic songs, including Kiss The Girl and Under The Sea.
