The Loneliest Place on Earth - Antarctica and Human Isolation with Brian Kelly

Surrounded by Clare Woods’ powerful paintings depicting figures at their most vulnerable and isolated, this talk by Brian Kelly from Dundee’s Discovery Point will explore how people respond to life in remote geographic locations.

Kelly will consider the psychological effects – both negative and positive – experienced by Antarctic explorers and scientists during their visits to the world’s last great wilderness. Drawing on original diary entries and art works that have also been influential to Woods such as the South Polar Times, along with modern medical studies, Kelly will examine the human response to physical isolation, from the ‘Heroic Age’ of Scott, Shackleton and Mawson to the present day.

Brian Kelly is Development Officer for Dundee Heritage Trust, which looks after Captain Scott’s Dundee-built research vessel RRS Discovery.
