These works form a series that the artist refers to as ‘Audio Visual Musical Forms’ – a title inspired by Norman McLaren’s 1967 publication, which issues a visual index for a range of established musical forms, blurring the boundaries between formal musical notations, diagrams, lettering and abstract form.
Graham Fagen
My Oology, 2009-2010

A private re-presentation and reconsideration of the artist’s childhood egg collection. This work is a personal account through which to re-examine the related social hierarchies, values and exchanges that this activity carries in the artist’s memory of a particular culture of collecting. The choice of title is both playful and rather melancholic - an oblique reference to a private eulogy for his childhood collection - a formal tribute to something lost.
Alex Frost
Wi Fi ZONE, 2010
Two colour screenprint on GFSmith ‘Plike’ White paper
Edition of 50, two colourways
79.5 x 56.4cm
Signed and numbered by artist
Price: £100 (unframed, plus VAT)
Alex Frost produced a new limited edition to coincide with his solo exhibition The Connoisseurs at DCA. Wi Fi ZONE began with a pencil rubbing made using the surface of one of the artists’ ceramic mosaics. This hand made image was then transferred into separations from which the screenprint was hand printed and finished with a highly digitized but hand printed text.
Frost’s work presents an awkward marriage of numerous distinct references: digital technology, food science, community craft workshops, speculative fiction and macro-economics. Wi Fi ZONE represents the artist’s investigations into areas in which technology and commerce sit alongside more traditional, handmade, means of production typically associated with the area of craft.
