Cara Tolmie

21 May 2011 - 31 July 2011

Gallery 1

For our 2011 summer exhibition we are pleased to present new and recent works by Cara Tolmie and Nina Rhode. The work of these two artists will be presented side-by-side in the two main galleries. Both artists work through recursive techniques in story-telling and optics, making multi-layered, multi-disciplined installations.

In Gallery 1 we feature a new work by Cara Tolmie. Cara Tolmie’s practice spans installation, performance, video, music, text and spoken word. Her exhibition at DCA, Read Thou Art And Read Thou Shalt Remain, is a new work in which an analysis of the various elements within a short film clip, taken from the window on a car on an american desert highway, forms the the basis for a structured narrative. This narrative being played out in a specially constructed minature environment, which in turn is presented in a small cinema, wth a lush multi-channel soundtrack.

Tolmie was born in Glasgow in 1984 and is a graduate from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee. She is also a former committee member of Glasgow’s Transmission Gallery and recently undertook the LUX Artists Associate Programme in London. Tolmie has received considerable acclaim for her performances at Art Basel, Miami Beach; Tramway, Glasgow; Serpentine Cinema; and Chisenhale Gallery, London, and her exhibitions at artist-run spaces such as Sierra Metro, Edinburgh and Transmission and Low Salt, Glasgow.
