What I Did This Summer
George Shaw
24 January 2004 - 21 April 2004
Gallery 1 & 2
Past and present collide in these two new exhibitions.
George Shaw’s hauntingly atmospheric paintings document the area in which he grew up. The mundane, in-between places such as council estate footpaths, car parks, underpasses and rundown shops are transformed into curiously beautiful and instantly recognisable images, depicted in Humbrol enamel and watercolour.
Two Films, from Germany and Lithuania, share common ground with Shaw’s works, and deal with personal memory, history and public space. They highlight the contrast between individual realities and state dreams, in the context of radical political change.
