Inspired by the true story of Andre Devigny, a French Resistance fighter imprisoned by the Nazis, A Man Escaped is not your typical P.O.W. story. An intense depiction of confinement, the filmis a claustrophobic portrait of a man holding on to his beliefs as others around himaccept their fate. Roger Ebert rightly regards director Robert Bresson (1901–1999), who was himself imprisoned by the Nazis, as ‘one of the saints of the cinema’.
