Fresh from its UK premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, we are re-opening our cinema with Brave, the latest animated film from Disney Pixar. Having brought us classics like Toy Story, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc, the studio has worked its magic on the Scottish Highlands. With epic battles, mystical legends, forests and glens, Brave is a coming-of-age story about a feisty young princess who defies tradition to fight for her freedom.
Our plucky heroine is Merida (Kelly Macdonald), skilled archer and daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane). When Merida turns to an eccentric old witch (Julie Walters) for help and is granted an ill-fated wish, her impetuous actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.
Walking a fine line between stereotype and authentic local humour, Brave is above all a poignant story of acceptance which will resonate with the whole family. Scottish landscapes have rarely been captured so beautifully and in the hands of directors Mark Andrews (The Incredibles) and Brenda Chapman (The Lion King) Brave is a thrilling tale of courage we can all be proud of.
We’re screening Brave in 2D and 3D, giving you a choice. Find listings for 3D screenings here.
