Cinema

Bring a Baby is chance for parents and carers to catch up on DCA's films. You can bring your buggies and prams into the cinema and we provide changing mats too. Screenings are exclusively for adults with a baby who is 15 months or under. No more than two adults per baby, please. DCA is one of Dundee's most baby friendly places - we welcome breast feeding mothers, can warm up a bottle for you, provide baby changing facilities and we'll even help you park your pram in the cinema.

A welcome homecoming for filmmaker Neil Jordan after his recent foray into Hollywood (The Brave One), Ondine is a grown-up version of The Little Mermaid tale, unashamedly weaving a tale of myth and magic with the very real lives of ordinary working people.

Colin Farrell (clearly happy to be home as well, as he gives a fine performance) is Syracuse, a recovering alcoholic desperately trying to do right by his wheelchair bound young daughter Annie (Alison Barry), and to rehabilitate his reputation as a decent man in the eyes of the local village. A fisherman by trade, Syracuse is trawling off the West coast of Ireland when he catches a beautiful and mysterious woman in his nets. She appears to be dead but, miraculously, comes back to life before his eyes. Everyone’s drab and ordinary life changes with the arrival of the ethereal Ondine (Alicja Bachleda), the woman from the sea, who may or may not be real. The world-weary Syracuse soon finds himself believing that the stranger may well be a dream come true, a woman sent to change his life and a powerful force for love and hope.

Jordan had some stellar names collaborating on this project – Ondine has a haunting soundtrack by Sigur Ros keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson and beautiful cinematography by Wong Kar-wai alumni Chris Doyle. Fáilte Ireland must be delighted with the results. Ireland has never looked more magical.
