This wonderful British comedy, in which a tyrannical Lancashire shoemaker gets his comeuppance at the hands of his daughter and her simple husband, is a work of consummate artistry in every department, from the performances (including Charles Laughton and John Mills), to Malcolm Arnold’s score and David Lean’s masterful direction.
