Getting older involves a busy lifestyle of activities and interests, but this generation has always had a love and appreciation for cinema. DCA would like to welcome anyone over the age of 60 to a new club, Older People At The Pictures, where we will show a wide range of specially selected films, both new releases and classics. The film will be introduced and there will be the chance for a chat before and after. Tickets will be £3.20.

DCA audience members already familiar with Jason Reitman’s previous work, Thank You For Smoking and Juno, will be reassured to know that the familiar elements of both those films – sharp dialogue, complicated human relationships, and great laughs – both reappear in spades in his new film, Up In The Air.

Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) is a “career transition consultant” who fires people for a living. His cool, detached manner and perfectly tailored wardrobe are well suited to the job. Efficient and ruthless at work, Ryan’s own obsession is with business air travel as he tries to reach the elite status of flyers who have hit the ten-million-mile mark. Ryan meets his match in Alex (Vera Farmiga), another business traveller who can match him club card for club card. But his professional and personal dreams hang in the balance when a young colleague, Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick), is brought in to modernise the “transition industry” by introducing remote video conferencing, making Ryan’s skills redundant.

Perhaps because of his upbringing in Canada, Reitman is able to step back and look at American culture with a critical eye. Certainly, he is on his way to becoming one of Hollywood’s best satirists. Up In The Air, finely tuned into today’s economic turmoil, is also smart, sexy, and extremely funny. Thanks to Clooney’s performance, this is a poignant portrait of a man and a society that has lost its heart, only to discover it might still be beating after all.
