Adapted from a novel by Julia Leigh, The Hunter is an eco-action film and a cautionary tale of corporate greed pitted against the mystery of the natural world. When one man goes on a quest for an elusive tiger, he discovers a great deal more about the dark side of human nature and his own inner soul.
Martin (Willem Dafoe), a ruthless mercenary by trade, is hired by an international biotech company to track down and kill the Tasmanian tiger, long believed to be extinct. He heads to the Tasmanian hills where the animal has allegedly recently been spotted. Billeted with a local family whose father has gone missing while hunting the tiger, Martin strikes up a friendship with the young daughter Sass (Morgana Davies from The Tree). Soon emotions and a conscience he thought he had buried long ago begin to surface. Trudging his way through the extraordinary landscape, Martin sets up his traps and begins the patient game of waiting for his prey. His search is increasingly thwarted by local groups who are fighting amongst themselves for control of the land. It soon becomes clear he isn’t the only one on the hunt.
An unforgettable film experience, The Hunter’s hauntingly eerie Tasmanian landscape (captured beautifully by cinematographer Robert Humphreys) is the perfect setting for Dafoe’s performance as a man struggling to reconcile the brutal nature of his work with his newfound emotions.
