The Tree of Liberty (PG)

Cinema

Many of the ideas, issues and symbols raised in Ruth Ewan's art also feature in The Tree of Liberty. Dundee and Fife loom large; Jean Redpath’s singing is masterful and magical. The film addresses contemporary facts through an 18th century lens, celebrating women in their stoical suffering, in resistance, and joy. Redpath wears branks; students of Home Economics sing bawdy songs in the Perth Road. The film explores the notion of brotherhood, the communality and healing power of art, and the possibilities of a post-war, post-colonial Scotland. Above all, it pays homage to the American composer Serge Hovey, who continued his heroic Burns Project, despite illness, until his death.

We are delighted that Tim Neat will be on hand to introduce and discuss the screening.
