Everyone Project explores accessibility at Dundee Contemporary Arts

DCA, in partnership with Generator, is delighted to be one of four national pilot schemes taking part in Everyone, an ambitious new project funded by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland, and delivered by engage Scotland. Everyone aims to explore how galleries in Scotland can work with disabled people to improve access and develop equalities policies.

Two artists, Jackie Smith and Aidan Moesby, have been appointed to undertake residencies based at DCA. Over the course of six weeks they will produce new work, test the accessibility of the building, and challenge assumptions about disability.

Jackie Smith works primarily with print, photography and digital imaging, and has been a DCA Print Studio member for several years. She plans to use the concentrated time in the studio to develop new large scale work and conduct an audit of facilities at DCA through the prism of her own experience of Multiple Sclerosis.

Aidan Moesby is based in North East England, where he works as an artist and writer. He combines his own work, which explores issues of memory, identity and communication, with community-based projects. He has been getting to know Dundee and hopes to place text-based artworks around the city soon.

Both artists will be blogging about their experiences at DCA:

here's something from Aidan's blog

"...My attempt at a talk was a fair effort but less chaos and more structure would have been good. It was more of a travelogue through my work, stopping off at some of the more interesting places. Well that’s my take on it. If nothing else everyone was impressed with the raspberries and cheese. Whilst the whole Bipolar stuff didn’t get many laughs - which surprised me - the bit about anxiety and being (or not being) a ‘Lurker’ raised a few hearty chuckles...".

and here's something from Jackie's blog

"...It is probably all down to fatigue, I am dog tired again. I don’t seem to be able to manage more than two days work before the shutters drop and so do I. There seems to be a world of difference between working away on my little projects at home and the big bad world of external work. Part of it of course is down to my long held but erroneous belief that if I spurn it and show it who’s boss, my M.S. will curl up and behave. But actually, like so much else; it too creeps up behind you and bites your bum...".
