Live Music: Umberto with support from Stefan Blomeier and Raz Ullah
Sun 31 March
Soul Function Suite, Dundee
Please note the venue for this event has been changed: it will now take place at the Soul Function Suite, Dundee.
A true master of the horror film soundtrack aesthetic, Umberto’s hypnotic, all-consuming music summons a world of graveyards, stalkers, haunted houses, witches and blood-stained corpses. Evoking the unsettling progressive rock of Goblin and the sinister, dystopian synth-work of John Carpenter, his work has garnered considerable praise for its gothic take on Italo disco and new-wave synth pop. In late 2012 Rock Action released Umberto’s latest album, Night Has a Thousand Screams, a re-imagined soundtrack to 1982 slasher flick Pieces. This show sees him tour his forthcoming release on Not Not Fun records, home to likes of Peaking Lights, Pocahaunted and Sun Araw.
Umberto will be supported by Glasgow-based musician Stefan Blomeier. Interested as much in the work of early ambient synthesists as raw acid house tracks, his material is hypnotic, melodic and especially dynamic in a live setting. Dundee-based musician Raz Ullah will offer a chance to sample his distinctive combination of music, sonic art and sound design. His music resonates with narcotic Kosmische rushes and fractured Radiophonics, taking in Dub echoes and somnambulistic drones, all informed by a commitment to magnetic tape and vintage synthesizers.
Tickets are available on the door, from DCA Box Office or on 01382 909 900. The event takes place at Redd Venue on Session Street in Dundee.
This event is part of Enter Darkness, a trilogy of live events which will explore and celebrate the darker corners of contemporary experimental music. Expect everything from hallucinatory drones to post-industrial beats; from eye-ball shaking physical sound to gothic post-punk; and from haunted tape loops to italian horror-inspired film music, all brought to you by some of the most renowned, innovative and challenging acts from the UK and around the world.
