State of Play: Art and Culture in Scotland Today
Sat 1 October

AHM’s third and final State of Play: Art and Culture in Scotland Today symposium will bring together the main themes of previous symposia in a debate about the role of art and culture in shaping Scotland’s future. A key element of the day will be the spoken delivery of one-minute artist manifestos where artists have the opportunity to give voice to their concerns and ambitions about where they feel visual art stands today and what the future might hold.
Speakers are Gerry Hassan, a leading writer and critic on culture and politics, Jenny Brownrigg Exhibition Director The Glasgow School of Art, artist Ross Sinclair and Jean Urquhart MSP. Gerry Hassan, the main speaker, has consistently argued the case for cultural change and transformation “It is time to start living dangerously and take risks. To think and act beyond tribes and labels. Instead, we need to develop new forms of engagement, discussion and debate, developing spaces, forums and places which aid this. This is time for humility, courage and listening, for trying a different kind of politics. It is time to start living, breathing and taking part in the new Scotland.”
Time: 11:00 - 16:00
Price: £10.00/£5.00
No latecomers will be admitted during the artists manifestos (11:15 - 11:30 and 14:00 - 14:15)
A lunch break is scheduled from 12:45 – 14:00 (lunch is not provided, but Jute cafe bar will be open throughout the day)
There will be no break during the morning session or the afternoon session.
There will be an accompanying exhibition of documentation related to the AHM symposia in Centrespace, Visual Research Centre, DJCAD (lower floors of DCA) between Wednesday 21 September and Sunday 2 October (open 12:00 – 16:30)
Following its success at the first two symposia, a key element of the third symposium will be the spoken delivery of ‘One Minute Artist Manifestos’. Artists will have the opportunity to give voice to their concerns and ambitions about where they feel visual art stands today and what the future might hold.
