Before Thor

Taika Waititi's back catalogue

29 June 2022

If there's one thing we love here at DCA, it's a new film from writer-director Taika Waititi! A firm favourite with both our Cinema team and Dundee audiences, his films are packed with warmth, wit and style, and usually an appearance from the man himself.

With his next film Thor: Love and Thunder hitting our screens from Fri 8 July, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at the wonderful Waititi back catalogue…

Eagle vs Shark (2007): The tale of two socially awkward misfits and the strange ways they try to find love; through revenge on high-school bullies, burgers, and video games.

Boy (2010): A hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age tale set in ‘80s New Zealand about Boy, a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson – we were one of a handful of UK cinemas to show this charming feature when it was originally released, screening it as a highlight of our 2011 Discovery Film Festival.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014): The seriously funny mockumentary about a group of vampires living in present day New Zealand – simply terrific fun.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016): An odd-couple adventure film with a huge heart, this comes with the highest recommendation you can think of, with a cherry on the top – that’s how much we love it! Check it out over on DCA at Home – every rental helps support our indie cinema.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017) This flashy, funny and action-packed installment of the Thor franchise brought a refreshing streak of comedy to the MCU, ditching Thor's Shakespearean-style dialogue and mythological backstory to allow the character to evolve into a more modern, hilarious and unpredictable superhero.

Jojo Rabbit (2019) This daring wartime satire follows a lonely German boy whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. As well as directing and starring in the film (as a child's imaginary version of Hitler), Waititi won an Oscar for his screenplay, adapted from on the novel Caging Skies.

Thor: Love and Thunder lands at DCA Cinema from Fri 8 – Thu 28 July, including Captioned, Ciné Sunday and Bring a Baby showtimes.
