Children's Art Week 2020

Mon 29 June - Sun 19 July

29 June 2020

It's time for Children’s Art Week 2020! This year there are lots of activities taking place online, at home and outside across three weeks in June and July.

Our building may be closed but that's not going stop us from getting involved, having fun and being creative. We're sad not to be out on our usual tour of Dundee childrens’ groups and family centres to do hands-on making and talk about art and what it can do in our daily lives, but we've still got lots of exciting plans coming up over the next few weeks.

For 2020, each week will focus on a special theme:

Week 1 (from 29 June): The Natural World
Week 2 (from 6 July): Connecting across generations
Week 3 (from 13 July): Literacy and creative writing

This year we've changed our approach to focus on making kits and sharing inspiration. We've called our project Look/Create/Share: art activities for inside and outside. Here's what we've got coming up:

  • Monday Makes and Activity Sheets
Mon & Sat throughout Children's Art Week
Our weekly Monday Makes step-by-step making projects and Activity Sheet downloads will have a Children's Art Week twist to fit in with the different themes. Inspired by DCA exhibitions, create together as a family and share the results using #DCAmakes. Activities include creating wallpaper designs from nature, re-designing leaves, remaking the sky and making a family tree.

    Find them online here.

  • Wellbeing Bags
We are inviting children to send us artworks and writing that can be included in Dundee Pensioners Forum's 'Wellbeing Bags'. These will be going out to older people who are on their own, to make a connection and say ‘hello’ with art. Send an artwork and a friendly message and we'll pass it on. You can email it to or post it to DCA Learning Team, Dundee Contemporary Arts, 152 Nethergate, Dundee, DD1 4DY.

"We are keen to encourage inter-generational engagement. So, really concentrating on reaching folk who are not digitally active - they seem to be easily forgotten about these days. A wee letter or a drawing from a young person could be just the thing to lift the spirit during these long shut-in days." - Dorothy A McHugh, Dundee Pensioners’ Forum

  • Family Growing and Art Activity Kits
    Mon 27 July
The Maxwell Centre are making 100 growing kits every month for local children which include plants, seedlings, seeds and compost to grow their own veg or fruit at home. The kits also have healthy ingredients for recipes with veg, fruit and edible flowers as wll as creative experiments or crafts related to gardening. For Children's Art Week, these will include our nature themed activities to help nurture childrens’ creativity and confidence.
"We are delighted to include DCA's nature-based art activities in the 100 growing kits we are distributing monthly to local families mostly from the Hilltown area. They cannot access our community garden now, so we are encouraging them to be creative by growing, cooking and making at home." -  Alison Goodfellow, Maxwell Centre Project Manager

Follow The Maxwell Centre on Facebook for more details of when and how these will be available. These will be allocated on a first come first served basis once the call goes out.

You can take a look at everything that's happenng as part of Children Art's Week here and follow what we and other organisations are doing via #ChildrensArtWeek #GetKidsCreating and #DCAmakes.

Children's Art Week is run by Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education and supported in 2020 by Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Wales and the D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust.
