Introducing Co-published Editions

30 May 2019

As part of our 20th birthday celebrations, we're delving into our extensive archives to shine a light on print projects and limited edition artworks that have been made possible with the help of DCA Print Studio.

Since we opened in 1999, our Print Studio team have worked with artists to support their practice and develop work of the highest standards in print. In addition to our own programme of DCA Editions,  we've helped numerous artists and collaborators to realise ambitious and innovative print projects, resulting in a rich archive of co-published artworks. A selection of these limited edition prints is now available to view and buy through our online shop, with more to be unveiled throughout the year.

Highlighted projects include The Cove Park Portfolio. Created in 2006, this collection of limited edition prints was produced in our Print Studio for Cove Park, an international artists’ residency centre located on an outstanding 50-acre rural site overlooking Loch Long on Scotland's west coast. The portfolio project includes prints by Claire Barclay, Christine Borland, Nathan Coley, Graham Fagen, Louise Hopkins, Ross Sinclair and Turner Prize winner Simon Starling. The release of the few remaining works from this collaboration is especially timely as Cove Park opens Scotland + Venice 2019, the Scottish presentation at this year's Venice Biennale, commissioned and curated by Linsey Young with Cove Park and the commissioned artist, Turner prize winner Charlotte Prodger.

Periodic Table of Emotions by Aidan Moesby

Another timely artwork included in the launch is Aidan Moesby’s Periodic Table of Emotions, as 2019 is the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. This collaboration from 2000 between the artist, University of Dundee, New Media Scotland and Project Ginsberg replaced the elements usually found on the periodic table with emotions, creating a dynamic visualisation of the mood of Dundee.

"These artworks have been exhibited around the UK and internationally, but it’s little known that they were realised here at DCA."

Other limited edition prints from the archive include The Hirta Portfolio, a creative collaboration between writer Bill Duncan and printmaker Susan Wilson about the history, culture and evacuation of the island of St Kilda. Also Epigraph to a Bird Man, a limited edition screen print created by artist Pum, in collaboration with Flip Artists, and shown as part of Lend Me Your Legends in DCA’s Information Space in 2016.

Our Editions Manager, Sandra De Ryker, said: “We are really excited to make all these projects more visible as part of the DCA 20 programme. All this time, this has been a kind of hidden archive of all the additional projects that have taken place here in the Print Studio. These artworks have been exhibited around the UK and internationally, but it’s little known that they were realised here at DCA. I look forward to telling people more about these great projects this year, and hope that the works will find their way into some interesting homes and collections!”

Beth Bate, Director of DCA, said: “Collaboration is an important part of the work that goes on across DCA and we’re delighted to be able to shine a light on some of the exciting projects that DCA Print Studio have made possible over the last 20 years. The new Co-published Editions category also allows us to offer even more opportunities for people to acquire affordable artworks by critically acclaimed contemporary artists, with each sale helping to support our future programme.”
