DCA is temporarily closed

9 April 2020

As we begin to adjust to a strange new reality, we wanted to share an update on what we’re doing while DCA is closed, and how we’re working to make sure we can continue enriching people’s lives through art, culture and creativity now and in the future.

We closed our doors on Tuesday 17 March in response to the developing advice from the government and a clear sense of responsibility to both our team and our audiences.

Usually, DCA closes for only four days a year; not being able to welcome audiences into the building for a prolonged period of time would have been unimaginable to us before this crisis began. We know that DCA plays an important role in many people’s lives. We miss our audiences and being able to offer our programme in full. Instead, we have been working hard to bring as much of our activity online as possible, with our film quiz, exhibitions reading group, family craft activities, staff recommendations and more already underway and being enjoyed by many. You can read about the full range of this activity here.

We are also keenly conscious of all the partnerships and collaborations that are now on hold, from our exhibitions public programme and print studio projects to the incredible work our learning team do with community groups throughout Dundee and our many cinema collaborations. We are keeping these conversations going and we continue to share information and ideas with other organisations in Dundee and across the country.

We’re fortunate that a combination of prudent financial management, much-appreciated ongoing support from our funders and the government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme have allowed us to continue paying our team (many of whom will be furloughed on 100% of their wages). We are honouring our commitments to freelancers, including many artists: we take the key role we play in the local and creative economies very seriously. Our position is as robust as we could hope for it to be, and yet as a public facing charity, being closed has significant financial implications for us. Over half of our income comes from you, through the cinema, shop, Jute Cafe Bar and workshops and courses.

A lengthy closure period therefore means that we will need more support in order to carry on serving audiences, artists and our community when we reopen.

There are a number of ways you can support DCA:

  • Donate
  • Become a member
  • Become a Friend or Patron
  • Sign up to our mailing list at the bottom of the page to receive more updates about our plans and learn about future opportunities to support us

We are so very grateful to the many people who have already donated, renewed and purchased memberships and wished us well since we closed our doors. We are thinking of all our visitors, partners, suppliers and funders, and wishing you the very best of health. We can’t wait to welcome you back to DCA.
