Exhibition Events for DCA Thomson Exhibition

Sat 3 December - Sun 19 February 2017

16 November 2016

We've announced the events that will be accompanying our DCA Thomson exhibition, running in our galleries from Sat 3 December - Sun 19 February 2017.

Beginning on Fri 2 December we've got Meet the Artists, an evening event featuring an exhibition introduction from Beth Bate, Director of DCA and the chance to hear from the six participating artists. Following this, there will be an Exhibition Preview where visitors can explore the works on show, followed by an After Party at Redd, with guest DJ.

There will be a host of creative workshops for younger visitors inspired by the works in the galleries. On Sat 3 December families can join exhibiting artist Hideyuki Katsumata for Comic Inspirations – a fun-filled workshop exploring the exhibition where children can create artworks inspired by comics and annuals. They’ll also have the chance to create character badges and add speech bubbles to artwork in Art Cart Adventures on Sat 17 December, Sat 7 January and Sat 11 February. On 18 February, children aged 5+ can be inspired by the work of Sofia Sita and Rabiya Choudhry to think about how families are shown in TV shows and comics such as The Simpsons and The Broons, before creating new comic families themselves.

Exhibiting artists Rob Churm and Malcy Duff - who are renowned for the absurdist humour in their visual art - will perform a mix of theatre, puppetry and spoken word in the galleries on the evening of Thu 19 January, and on Thu 9 February local artists will provoke discussions and present their responses to the work on show at DCA’s recurring (((echo))) event.

On Sat 21 January there will be a screening in DCA Cinema of post-war film Hue and Cry to coincide with the exhibition. Among one of the first British comedies made after the Second World War, the film follows a group of East End children who foil a gang of robbers who are using a children’s comic to communicate their plans. Preceding this there will be a family workshop using printed letters and hand drawn illustrations to create your own comic.

On Tue 6 December, visitors aged 60+ can take part in a gallery tour and exhibition-inspired workshop as part of DCA’s Senior Citizen Kane Club.

The exhibition runs from Sat 3 December – Sun 19 February 2017 and is free to attend. As well as work from the six artists, there will also be DC Thomson archive material on show. Throughout the exhibition, DCA’s Activity Room will also be open (unless being used for a workshop), where families can go to relax and take part in a free creative task. We hope you can make it along!
