Gaining confidence through photography with DCA Young Photo Club

22 August 2018

Our Young Photo Club has been going from strength to strength over the past year, attracting young people aged 11-16 from across Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perth & Kinross to join in, get started and improve their photography skills.

Over the last 12 months we've been out and about around Dundee capturing different aspects of the city, from the history and atmosphere of the Howff to the changing Waterfront developments and the Overgate by street light. It's been a pleasure to welcome different guest photographers to come in, talk about their work and give technical demos and instructions, all with the support of our three trusty volunteers from Dundee Photographic Society. With session topics ranging from composition, portraiture and using light boxes to editing, being creative with Photoshop, making photograms or shadowgraphs in DCA Print Studio and experimenting with inks in water, there have been plenty of new skills to learn and styles to try out.

After all their hard work throughout the year, we're delighted and very proud to say that two of our Young Photo Club participants gained recognition in this year’s 52nd Dundee Photographic Society’s annual competition (Under 18s category).

"This boosted my confidence in photography so much..."

Darci, who was 'Highly commended' in last year's event, won two prizes in this year's competition:

“When I found out I had won 1st AND 4th place, I was over the moon. This boosted my confidence in photography so much and now I will continue to enter competitions with no fear. I recommend photography as a hobby because you can express so much of your creativity. And I also find it releases stress.”

Sara won third place and was very pleased with her progress over the year:

“It was a big surprise that I had won third place with my photo of “Stone Sculpture”. It shows how I have improved because last year I was never even placed but now I got third and I am hoping to work and learn to the best of my ability to make it up to the top. You just need to put yourself out there and see what you can achieve.”

As well as the young people themselves, we also asked their parents for feedback about Young Photo Club and how they felt that their children had benefitted from attending:

"It is a great opportunity to learn a new skill.  Way more than a youth group, in fact their age is not really a factor in the amount that they learn and the skills that they gain. These workshops make my daughter feel like an artist."

"These workshops make my daughter feel like an artist."

"My daughter has loved it, is keen to learn more and has rolled her new skills into her school Art work. In addition, at their request, we recently attended a photography exhibition at Frames Gallery, Perth.  I think you've maybe given them a passion for life!  Perfect timing (and a sheer coincidence) that she asked for and received a camera for Christmas!"

"Our daughter has gained a huge amount of confidence in her photography. She has improved her skills considerably and learned many new techniques. None of which would have been possible without the teaching and encouragement of the Photo Club tutors and guests."

Aged 11-16 and want to get involved? Our DCA Young Photo Club is back for a new term. Join us for our fortnightly sessions until 11 December 2018. Each session is £8 and can be booked online or by calling 01382 432 444.

We will also be holding a two-day exhibition of work by and for young people in celebration of Year of Young People 2018 with support from Hot Chocolate. Come and visit us in the Visual Research centre (VRC), downstairs from Jute Cafe Bar, Sat 8 - Sun 9 Septembwe between 12:00 - 18:00.

With thanks to Karen Johnstone, Sheila and Alan Borthwick, Kevin Bruce, Dundee Photographic Society, DCA Print Studio and all our guest speakers.
