We're delighted to announce our gallery events for autumn

29 August 2018

We're delighted to announce our public programme of gallery events for our autumn season.  On Sat 8 September two new Scottish premiere exhibitions will open in our galleries: Santiago Sierra's Black Flag and Mike Kelley's Mobile Homestead.  These exhibitions explore questions of nationlism, identity and belonging in the context of local, national and global uncertainty.

"explore questions of nationlism, identity and belonging in the context of local, national and global uncertainty"

Our events programme launches on Fri 7 September with a special In Conversation event between artist Santiago Sierra and leading anarchist theorist and activist Uri Gordon. Following this, a preview of both exhibitions will take place from 19:00 – 21:00, giving visitors a chance to see both exhibitions before they open to public on the Saturday. This opening will be sponsored by our friends at Verdant Spirits, so visitors can enjoy a delectable G&T!

On Wed 26 September at 18:00 curator Phoebe Roberts will give a talk. Roberts looks after The Artangel Collection, a body of moving image works, including Mobile Homestead, commissioned by Artangel over the last 25 years. Her talk will focus on the challenges and complexities of collecting, maintain and disseminating innovative contemporary art projects such as Mobile Homestead.

A Performative Deconstruction of Black Flag by Nine Yamamoto-Masson will take place on Thu 11 October at 18:00. Nine Yamamoto is a Berlin-based artist, theorist, researcher, translator and community organiser, who will develop this talk from within a decolonialist, intersectional feminist framework.

In The White Flag of Antarctica: The Fabric of a Nation on Thu 18 October, Dr Claire Warrior, Senior Exhibitions Curator at Royal Museums Greenwich, will look at the act of planting flags at certain moments in history, particularly considering the use of these emblems in relation to the exploration (and conquest) of both the North and South poles.

Locating Mobile Homestead: A Talk by Laura Sillars takes place on Thu 15 November. In 2010, Sillars (currently Director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) worked in Detroit with Mike Kelley and Executive Producer of Artangel, James Lingwood on the creation of Mobile Homestead. In her talk in Gallery 2, she’ll discuss her first-hand experience of working on this remarkable project.

During the last week of both exhibitions Eoin Dara, Head of Exhibitions at DCA, will give a Curator’s Tour of the galleries where he’ll talk about the development of both of these projects, considering how they might link to the past, present and future of a city like Dundee.

The Centre for Remote Environments: A talk by Elaine Shemilt will close our programme of gallery events on Thu 22 November. Artist and researcher Professor Elaine Shemilt will discuss the hugely exciting potential of the Centre for Remote Environments in South Georgia.

Several of our recurring gallery events return for these exhibitions. Senior Citizen Kane Gallery Tour and Workshop is running twice during the autumn season: on Tue 18 September the focus is on Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead, then on Tue 2 October participants will be looking at Santiago Sierra’s Black Flag. These friendly and welcoming sessions offer over 60s a special tour of the works in our galleries followed by a creative workshop with tea, coffee and biscuits provided to fuel conversation and creativity.

For families there are three Family Art Labs. On Sat 29 September participants can explore Black Flag, then on Sat 24 November inspiration will be drawn from Mobile Homestead. There is also a special Family Art Lab for under 5s on Sat 10 November, where wee ones can join in an experimental, sensory workshop.

From Sat 8 September Exhibition Tours will take place in the galleries daily at 11:00 and 15:00. These are 15-minute introductions to the exhibition by one of our friendly Visitor Assistants, with the opportunity to ask questions about the works on show.

Santiago Sierra’s Black Flag and Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead run from Sat 8 September until Sun 25 November. DCA galleries are open 10:00 – 18:00 daily (20:00 on Thu).
