Monday Makes: Build a Bird Box

5 April 2021

We're back with a brand new Monday Make! This week, we've been inspired by the work of Scottish sculptor Martin Boyce and his interest in modern design and architecture.

In 2009, DCA curated the exhibition No Reflections by Martin Boyce. This was shown in Venice at the 53rd International Art Biennale and then in DCA galleries. Martin Boyce also produced two limited edition prints as part of our Editions programme which refer to the artist's bird box sculpture:

You may have seen our very own large bird box in Create Space. In this make, we’ll show you how to build your very own mini bird box sculpture.

Watch our video tutorial below or download our step-by-step guide here.

We've put together a template that you can print out and use but if you don't have access to a printer, don't worry - you can use a recycled box instead. Just cover the box in paper, cut out some windows and colour in your design.

We'd love to see your finished bird box - share it with us using #DCAmakes. Take a look at our activity sheet and add some brilliantly coloured birds to your bird box.

If you enjoy this activity and you're able to, we'd be so grateful if you'd consider donating to help us keep enriching people's lives through art, culture and creativity. Thank you!
