Monday Makes: Create a Shonky Creature

7 June 2021

For this Monday Make we’re throwing back to 2018 group exhibition Shonky: The Aesthetics of Awkwardness and creating some shonky creatures.

Shonky: The Aesthetics of Awkwardness came to our galleries in 2018 as part of Hayward Gallery Touring's Curatorial Open. This major group project was curated by artist John Walter and explored the nature of visual awkwardness through the work of different artists and architects. For this make we're taking a close look at Cosima Von Bonin's sculpture, pictured below.

You can also download our step-by-step guide to help with your make. Feel free to get as creative as you like when it comes to making your creature - the more unusual, the better! Here are some more ideas:

  • It doesn't have to resemble a real animal, you could make up your own creature.
  • Make your creature an unusual or bright colour.
  • Add a crazy pattern, hair or accessories.
  • Think about different ways to display your creature - on a plinth, in a frame.

However your creature turns out, we'd love to see it. Share your creation online with us using #DCAmakes or email a photo to

If you enjoy this activity and you're able to, we'd be so grateful if you'd consider donating to help us keep enriching people's lives through art, culture and creativity. Thank you!
