Artist's Screening: Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait

Douglas Gordon, Philippe Parreno

To coincide with Douglas Gordon’s exhibition in our galleries, we are presenting a selection of his other films in our cinema. This is a rare chance to see the major cinematic work, Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, a collaboration between Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno.

Shot over a single day - April 23rd, 2005 - as Zinedine Zidane captained Real Madrid in a game with Villareal, 17 cameras were trained entirely on one man throughout the match.  Although Parreno and Gordon have chosen as their subject one of the greatest midfielders of all time, Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is a film which can also be appreciated by those who know little or could care less about football.

Undeniably a great footballer, Zizou (as he is affectionately known by fans) is also a charismatic and enigmatic screen presence.  Witness the strength and grace of his movement, his focus and determination, and the flashes of anger and joy as he struggles with his own performance, that of his teammates and the referees.

"Zidane certainly succeeds in exploring the complexity of its charismatic subject"

As an example of contemporary portraiture, this film asks more questions than it answers – indeed no matter how many cameras are rolling, can we ever really capture essence of an individual?  With the hypnotic ambient guitar sounds of Mogwai producing a wonderfully immersive soundscape to accompany the action, Zidane certainly succeeds in exploring the complexity of its charismatic subject through sheer observation.
