Harry Birrell Presents Films of Love and War

Matt Pinder

Harry Birrell Presents Films of Love and War is screening as part of Scottish Encounters, a strand in our programme that gives local audiences the opportunity to see new work from emerging Scottish screen talent, from shorts to features and from documentary to fiction. Each screening also provides a chance to meet the people behind the work. We are thrilled to welcome director Matt Pinder and producer Carina Birrell to DCA to present their film and answer audience questions after the screening.

This is the extraordinary story of an amateur filmmaker who captured his own extraordinary life on camera.

"Plunders the treasure trove of Harry's 400 films and personal diaries..."

Harry Birrell was given his first cine-camera as a boy in 1928 and spent his life recording incidents great and small. Home movies of family events and fine romances now ache with fond nostalgia but Harry's life was also filled with faraway adventures. Narrated by Richard Madden (Bodyguard, Game of Thrones), the documentary plunders the treasure trove of Harry's 400 films and personal diaries to capture a vivid sense of wartime years spent in Bombay, the jungles of Burma leading a battalion of Gurkhas, and the mountains of Nepal.

Matt Pinder’s beautifully composed, captivating documentary delivers one man’s cinematic vision of the 20th century and his own incredible journey through it.
