Ridley Scott directs this darkly entertaining, star-studded true story of glamour, desire and ultimately murder among the aristocracy of the fashion world. An epic saga spanning three decades, it is a film that luxuriates in a sense of excess and is itself a spectacle befitting its extravagant subject matter.

“a family as dysfunctional as any of our favourite fictional dynasties”

In 1972, the Italian socialite Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), marries Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) – the son of Gucci heir Rodolfo Gucci (a louche Jeremy Irons). Over the next 20-something years, the young couple become fixtures of the Italian and worldwide press, living a life of utmost luxury. But behind the lavish lifestyle, the Gucci empire is a family as dysfunctional as any of our favourite fictional dynasties; a tightly-wound web of ego, scandal and haute couture.

Gaga and Driver are fantastic as the couple at the centre of the drama, Gaga in particular a seamless fit for this opulent world of high fashion; at the height of her tabloid powers, the real-life Patrizia was dubbed ‘Lady Gucci’ by the Italian press, perhaps an influence on Gaga’s own fashion-minded pop persona? With the rest of the cast heaving with award nominees and winners (Al Pacino, Salma Hayek, an unrecognisable Jared Leto) and phenomenal costume design by Oscar-winner and frequent Scott collaborator Janty Yates, House of Gucci is glorious, jet-setting, big-screen entertainment.
