Although he has only made two features, Milan-born filmmaker Michelangelo Frammartino has established himself as a unique voice in world cinema. Driven by an endless curiosity about the Italian landscape, his films are quiet, unhurried, utterly absorbing big screen experiences.

"...a unique voice in world cinema."

Set in 1961, at a time when Italy’s economic miracle was in full flow in the industrial north, Frammartino’s third film, Il Buco focuses on a group of young speleologists who explore a vast cave in the southern region of Calabria.

Scotland’s annual celebration of the best in Italian cinema returns with an exciting, wide-ranging selection from the past twelve months. Featuring work from both established auteurs such as Marco Bellocchio and Wilma Labate as well as emerging directors such as Michela Cescon and Silvia Brunelli, this year’s programme blends a variety of genres, styles and registers and, as ever, spans the length and breadth of the peninsula. Most of the titles are UK or Scottish premieres, including our opening film, Michelangelo Frammartino’s Il BucoThe retrospective screenings include a tribute to the late Italian film icon Monica Vitti and a centenary celebration of the great political filmmaker Francesco Rosi.

The Italian Film Festival is programmed by Dr Pasquale Iannone - who will introduce selected screenings – and is supported by Creative Scotland and the Italian Institute of Culture.
