In the Evening There is Feeling is DCA’s Exhibitions reading group. It takes its name from Gertrude Stein’s 1914 book Tender Buttons and focuses, in an informal and welcoming way, on feminist and queer texts from the worlds of art and literature.

This session will introduce and discuss some of the ideas contained within Ama Josephine Budge’s newly commissioned text responding to Alberta Whittle’s work, as well as reading and thinking through some poems by Kamau Brathwaite that connect to both Budge’s and Whittle’s practice.

Ama Josephine Budge is a speculative writer, artist, curator and pleasure activist whose work navigates intimate explorations of race, art, ecology and feminism, working to activate movements that catalyse human rights, environmental evolutions and troublesomely queered identities. She is a PhD candidate in Psychosocial Studies with Dr Gail Lewis at Birkbeck. Her research takes a queer, decolonial approach to challenging climate colonialism in Sub-Saharan Africa with a particular focus on inherently environmentalist pleasure practices in Ghana and Kenya.
