Lu Over The Wall

This year’s festival closes with a sneak peek at a brand new Japanese animation, once again brought to us by our friends at Scotland Loves Anime, ahead of its general release in the UK. We should also say that if you are keen to see this preview then don’t wait too long – last year our preview Your Name sold out completely during the festival and went on to have huge success across the UK – so if you want to be sure of your ticket for this year’s special offering, then we suggest you get it early! This year’s pick is Lu Over The Wall, written and directed by Masaaki Yuasa, and winner of the award for Best Feature Film at the 2017 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

Following his parents’ divorce, loner middle schooler Kai moves with his father from Tokyo to the declining fishing town of Hinashi to live with his grandfather. He finds little to entertain him in his new home, preferring to spend long hours on his own, creating music on his laptop and sharing it on the internet. When his classmates Kunio and Yūho discover his online identity, they invite him to join their band, which Kai is finally persuaded to do when he hears they practise on a remote and allegedly haunted island. On the island they begin to learn the truth about the local legends of merfolk, and Kai’s songs bring him into the presence of Lu, a siren whose whole being is physically transformed whenever she hears music. But local fears and superstitions about the nature of these marine residents cannot be easily overcome, and Kai and Lu’s developing friendship brings them to the brink of catastrophe…
