Moomins on the Riviera

Xavier Picard

Large, white and huggably round, the Moomins surely outstrip even Nokia, saunas and Eurovision hard rockers Lordi as Finland’s greatest gift to the world. First created by writer and illustrator Tove Jansson in the 1940s, the residents of Moominvalley have shared their adventures through books, comic strips, television, films and even their own theme park. Always a big hit at Discovery Film Festival, we are delighted to revisit Moominmamma, Moominpappa and the clan in their sparkling holiday adventure from 2015.

“…a welcome return of old friends in all their glory”

Based on the original comic strip of the same name, Moomins on the Riviera is a hand-drawn animation that follows the family (along with Snorkmaiden and Little My) as they head south for a holiday on the Mediterranean. Moominpappa meets the aristocratic Marquis Mongaga, while Snorkmaiden is bowled over by the attentions of dashing playboy Clark Tresco. Not all the family are bedazzled by such extravagance however, and Moominmamma and Moomin retire to the beach to pine for the simpler life they are used to. Will the Moomin family be split apart by the Riviera lifestyle?

The film offers the voice talents of Russell Tovey (Pride, TV's Banished) as Moomin and beautiful animation made up from some 120,000 individual drawings. With the approval of Tove Jansson’s estate (who guard the Moomins brand with a fierce determination to maintain the highest standards) this is a welcome return of old friends in all their glory.
