Nobody Knows

Hirokazu Kore-eda

"A masterpiece of humanist cinema."

Nobody Knows, Kore-eda’s extraordinary fourth film is a masterpiece of humanist cinema. Based on a real incident in which a mother secretly left herfour children alone in a Tokyo apartment for months at a time, Kore-eda shot his film overthe course of a calendar year, in sequence, working with non-professional child actors who he encouraged to improvise.

The results could have been messy, but Kore-eda has a vice-like grip on the material. The pace may be more languid, but it builds to an final act that packs a huge emotional punch.
