Senior Citizen Kane: No Time to Die

Cary Joji Fukunga

Originally due for release in April 2020, Bond is finally back! Daniel Craig dons the tuxedo for one last time in the latest instalment in the adventures of everyone’s favourite super-spy, and although we at DCA haven’t yet seen the film, rumours abound that not only is this Craig’s last outing, but also potentially James Bond’s. Cary Joji Fukunga (director of HBO’s first True Detective season, as well as writer of 2017’s It) takes over from Sam Mendes on directing duty, and with Fleabag’s Phoebe-Waller Bridge brought in to tighten up the script and Billie Eilish performing the title track, expect this to be a thoroughly contemporary, stylish look at the world of Bond.

“…a thrilling, spectacular end to Daniel Craig’s tenure”

The story picks up with Bond trying to enjoy retirement in Jamaica but as usual, his peace proves short-lived when long-time ally Felix Leiter turns up looking for a favour. Following tradition, Bond’s mission will take him across the globe, from sun-soaked Italy, to the frozen tundras of Norway, to our own Scotland, as Bond comes into contact with faces from his past (the usual supporting cast of Q, M and Moneypenny, as well as old flame Madeleine Swann) and some new characters, most notably Captain Marvel’s Lashana Lynch as fellow 00-agent, Nomi. Bond wouldn’t be Bond without a great villain, and after turns by Javier Bardem in Skyfall and Christoph Waltz as Blofeld in Spectre, No Time to Die recruits another Oscar-winner in the form of Rami Malek (Bohemain Rhapsody), who plays the mysterious, menacing Safin.

Daniel Craig’s time as Bond has marked a noticeable shift in tone from the previous Brosnan era, and No Time to Die looks to be pulling out all the stops (and Aston Martins) in creating a thrilling, spectacular end to Craig’s tenure.
