Senior Citizen Kane: Respect

Liesl Tommy

Respect, the latest musical biopic to hit our screens, tells the story of legendary singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin as she attempts to find her voice in 1960s America and make her mark on the music industry, becoming the iconic Queen of Soul.

“Hudson channels the strength and determination of a woman who forged her own path”

Daughter of an influential preacher, Clarence Franklin (Forest Whitaker), Aretha Franklin (played by the Oscar-winning Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson) has extraordinary musical talent. But her career is slow to start as she struggles to control and define her own sound, under the influence of her father and her sometimes domineering husband Ted White (Marlon Wayans). Handpicked by Franklin herself for the role, Hudson channels the strength and determination of a woman who forged her own path to artistic success.
