Hirokazu Kore-eda

Kore-eda’s skill at bringing us understated human dramas full of warmth but tinged with sadness are on show in his latest film. Returning home, a family of thieves find a hungry little girl called Yuri (Miyu Sasaki). Feeling sorry for her, they invite her back to eat in the home they share with grandma Hatsue (Kilin Kiki), Osamu’s partner Noboyu (Sakura Ando), and the latter’s half-sister Aki (Mayu Matsuoka).

The impulse to give a vulnerable young child a betterlife is so strong, and Yuri’s embrace of her new family so affecting, it is easy to put aside the uneasy thought that technically, she’s been kidnapped.
