The Green Knight

David Lowery

Writer/director David Lowery’s career is one we’ve been excited to follow at DCA; from the existential arthouse strangeness of A Ghost Story to the zingy, charming Robert Redford-starring The Old Man and the Gun, to the bittersweet Pete’s Dragon remake for Disney, Lowery is a director who seems to excel at whatever style of filmmaking he turns his hand to. Teaming up with indie darling production company A24 once again for The Green Knight, Lowery now sets his sights on adapting the 14th century Arthurian legend Sir Gawain and the Green Knight into a dark, modern, epic work of fantasy. If you’ve been experiencing a craving for grown-up fantasy since the ending of Game of Thrones, this might just be the film to fill that Westeros-sized hole.

“a dark, modern, epic work of fantasy”

When the sinister, mysterious Green Knight (The Witch’s Ralph Ineson under seriously menacing prosthetics) appears one day at the court of the King, the young knight Gawain (Dev Patel) finds himself drawn into a dangerous quest to prove his honour. Lowery’s eye for visuals has always been strong, but here he excels, creating a world which is at once boldly iconographic, nightmarishly weird and pleasingly earthy. There are shades of Pan’s Labyrinth and the Dark Souls video game series in the grim, mythic atmosphere, and Tolkien was famously a great admirer of the original epic poem, but this is a film which very much feels unique in its sense of style. With effects by the peerless Weta Digital (The Lord of the Rings) and the incredible natural landscapes and locations of Ireland delivering majestic grandeur, the film’s impressive visuals are matched by a characterful cast of familiar faces (Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan, Erin Kellyman) and in Lowery, a director of visionary ambition.
