Top Hat

Mark Sandrich

The best-known, and probably best, of the Astaire-Rogers musicals, Top Hat is pure screwball comedy: Boy meets Girl, Boy argues with Girl (over his loud tap dancing, no less); Boy and Girl fall in love. The formula, however, allows for plenty of song and dance numbers and the combination of an Irving Berlin score and the immaculate choreography are irresistible.

"The best-known, and probably best, of the Astaire-Rogers musicals..."

Astaire’s solo on Top Hat, White Tie and Tails is a standout, but the topper is the duet on Cheek to Cheek. Never was Ginger’s statement that she “did everything Fred did, only backwards and in high heels” be more apt. Absolute magic.

We are absolutely delighted to be screening a rare 35mm print of this seminal feel-good musical. Don’t miss your chance to hear its lavish songs and see its effortless, masterful dance sequences on the big screen, amplified by the iconic chemistry between Rogers and Astaire.

Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO.
