A Private Life

Duration: 1h43

Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster brings comic timing, charisma and impeccable French to her César-nominated performance in this playful mystery thriller, in which she stars alongside Daniel Auteuil, Virginie Efira and Mathieu Amalric.

Deeply troubled after learning of the suicide of a patient, psychoanalyst Lilian Steiner (Foster) suspects foul play. Enlisting the help of her ex-husband and sleuthing partner (Auteuil), their chaotic investigation takes them to unexpected places, causing Lillian to unravel (and sending her to her own analyst, played in cameo by celebrated documentarian Frederick Wiseman).

Drawing on Alfred Hitchcock and Brian De Palma, Rebecca Zlotowski’s (Other People’s Children) sleek, campy caper is as full of charm as its spiky protagonist, drawn with intense focus by Foster.
